Dani, Scott, Benjy, and Chris went on a small boating trip to look for surf. We stopped by two islands and two different reef breaks, but the surf wasn't that great. We had a fun time cruising around, however, and it was good to get more experience with surfing reef breaks. In the following picture, everyone looks a little goofy, but trust that we had a great time out on the boat.
This is basically the view from the side of the boat. We set up anchor about 200 meters out from the surf, then we paddle out go get into the lineup. You can see exactly how calm it was out there. We did get some good wave sets, but not that many. I think we might have taken some good pictures with the underwater camera, so we'll have to put some of those up soon.
We had a glass bottom boat, right? It was cool because you could see below, but sometimes scary because you'd notice how close we were to scraping the reef. In the video below, you can see some of the exotic species of marine life that we found on the daytrip.
It's Sunday, so it was our day to say goodbye to Pauline, Laura, and Sanna. They're taking off for Bali again to take a bicycle trip (WEAR YOUR HELMETS, LADIES, OR THE AMERICANS WILL BE ANGRY!). We're not sure if we'll meet up with them again in Indonesia, but there are plenty of standing invitations to visit the US or Holland or Sweden in the future. Or maybe we'll meet up again in Indo next year.
Pauline and Laura are waving goodbye on the upper deck. Their boat is a dual outboard engine, 500-hp beast. The boat we'll be taking on our Komodo dragon tour is supposed to have a 24-hp motor. It might take a while to get there...
Goodbye Pauline, Laura, and Sanna! Safe travels.
Here's our trivia question for the day: what types of wind are there, and how does wind affect surf conditions? The most complete/informative answer gets an Indonesian bracelet.

You want offshore wind cuz it helps form better waves!! Onshore wind kills waves, which sucks. Offshore blows in from the ocean and onshore comes over the land. Offshore pushes the waves toward the beach and onshore pushes them into the ocean. It makes sense if you think about.
I miss you guys, keep the posts coming!

Does creativity count for this one too? I want an Indo bracelet! I don't know anything about types of surfing winds, but there are 5 types of surfing waves: a tall tsunami wave that makes all sorts of noise and music as it rolls into shore, a cool KZ wave that freezes exactly at the point when the crest folds over (not the best for surfing because it's very sharp), a wave that can act like any other type of wave if it wishes (the best for surfing), a chill iWave that is the craze, and a curly crazy flashing wave unlike the others (the kind that everyone loves). The wind shapes them as they splash around the islands of Indonesia.
